Surface Plasmons on a Quasiperiodic Grating

چکیده

Amethod is presented for calculating the frequencies of non-retarded surface plasmons propagating on a semi-inifinite medium with a surface profile described by a one-dimension quasiperiodic function. The profiles are generated, in analogy with previous work on quasiperiodic superlattices, by repeating unitary cells constructed according to an inflation rule. Dispersion relations are obtained for a semi-infinite free-electron metal as the active medium, with surface profiles obeying the Fibonacci and Thue-Morse sequences. Multiple coupling of surface plasmons in quasiperiodic gratings.

Whereas periodic gratings enable us to couple light into a surface plasmon polariton only at a specific angle and wavelength, we show here that quasiperiodic gratings enable the coupling of light at multiple wavelengths and angles. The quasiperiodic grating can be designed in a systematic manner using the dual-grid method, thereby enabling us to control the coupling strength and grating dimensi...

Adjustable Plasmonic Bandgap in One-Dimensional Nanograting Based on Localized and Propagating Surface Plasmons

Compared to the long history of plasmonic gratings, there are only a few studies regarding the bandgap in the propagation of plasmonic surface waves. Considering the previous studies on interpretation of plasmonic bandgap formation, we discuss this phenomenon using the effect of both surface plasmon polariton (SPP) and localized surface plasmon (LSP) for our fabricated one-dimensional metallic-...

Numerical optimization of a grating coupler for the efficient excitation of surface plasmons at an Ag-SiO2 interface

The efficient generation of surface plasmons from free space optical waves is still an open problem in the field. Here we present a methodology and optimized design for a grating coupler. The photoexcitation of surface plasmons at an Ag-SiO2 interface is numerically demonstrated to yield greater than 50% coupling from a Gaussian beam into surface plasmon voltages and currents.

Terahertz-pulse emission through laser excitation of surface plasmons in a metal grating.

The second-order processes of optical-rectification and photoconduction are well known and widely used to produce ultrafast electromagnetic pulses in the terahertz frequency domain. We present a new form of rectification that relies on the excitation of surface plasmons in metal films deposited on a shallow grating. Multiphoton ionization and ponderomotive acceleration of electrons in the enhan...

Nanoparticle-enhanced diffraction gratings for ultrasensitive surface plasmon biosensing.

Ultrasensitive surface bioaffinity sensors are created by the adsorption of gold nanoparticles onto gold diffraction gratings. An enhanced diffraction obtained in a surface plasmon resonance geometry is observed due to the optical coupling of the planar surface plasmons in the grating to the localized surface plasmons in the gold nanoparticles. As a first example, these nanoparticle grating bio...
